Microsoft's president, Brad Smith, just spilled the tea on the recent chaos at OpenAI involving the sacking and subsequent rehiring of Sam Altman.

Now, there were rumors swirling around that this whole ordeal was about a major AI safety concern. Elon Musk even threw his two cents in, suggesting it was all about the dangers of artificial intelligence. But hold on, says Brad Smith. According to him, that wasn't the main dish on this drama menu.

In an interview with the BBC, Smith spilled the beans, or should I say, the AI algorithms. He mentioned that the firing wasn't fundamentally about AI safety but rather a good old-fashioned divergence of opinions within the board. Cue the gasps.

Microsoft, being the big investor in OpenAI, even extended a job offer to Altman after he got the boot. Talk about a plot twist! But, lo and behold, after some company-wide revolt with over 700 employees threatening to jump ship to Microsoft, Altman made a triumphant return. Now, that's what I call an employee endorsement.

The reasons for Altman's sacking remain a mystery, with the board simply stating he wasn't consistently candid in communications, and they lost confidence in his leadership. Sounds like a breakup line from a high-stakes corporate relationship.

But wait, there's more! Microsoft is dropping a cool £2.5 billion on advanced data centers in the UK to boost AI innovation. Smith sees a future of healthy competition between Microsoft, Google, and others, and this recent saga with OpenAI is apparently all part of pushing that agenda forward.

And, for those worried about AI taking over the world in the next 12 months, Smith throws some cold water on those fears. He says there's absolutely no probability of artificial general intelligence surpassing humans in the next year. So, breathe easy, folks; the robots won't be running the show just yet.
