Transformative Energy Efficiency Overhaul for 30,000 Homes in NSW

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Australian and New South Wales (NSW) Governments have committed a substantial $206 million investment to uplift the living conditions of over 30,000 social housing properties. This joint effort aims to implement energy efficiency upgrades that will make homes more comfortable, with a focus on providing relief to low-income renters and apartment residents.

A Comprehensive Approach to Energy Savings

Upgrading 24,000 Homes:

A major part of this initiative involves upgrading more than 24,000 social housing properties. Residents can anticipate improvements such as heat pump hot water systems, ceiling fans, reverse-cycle air conditioners, solar systems, insulation, and draught proofing. This comprehensive approach targets some of the least energy-efficient homes in Australia, promising a significant reduction in energy consumption and subsequent household power bill savings.

Priority for Impact:

To maximize the impact, priority will be given to the least energy-efficient properties based on minimum construction standards. Additionally, locations facing extreme heat and cold weather conditions will be prioritized, ensuring that those most in need benefit the most from these upgrades.

Heading 3: Empowering Communities with Renewable Energy

Solar Banks Program:

Simultaneously, the Australian Government is investing $30 million in rooftop solar installations and 'solar garden' community energy plots. The Solar Banks program will allow over 10,000 households, including low-income families and apartment residents, to access rebates of up to 50% for the installation of rooftop solar systems. This initiative aims to save households up to $600 annually on their energy bills.

Inclusive Solutions:

Recognizing the diversity of residents' living situations, the government is offering subsidies for the purchase of 'solar garden' portions at large-scale solar farms. This inclusive approach ensures that all eligible low-income households, apartment residents, and renters can participate in and benefit from cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.

Community Renewables on the Horizon:

As part of the broader commitment to renewable energy, an additional $1 million will be invested in community renewable energy projects on the Far South Coast. This funding will support local initiatives, creating jobs and delivering cleaner, more economical energy to communities.

These initiatives underscore the commitment of the Australian and NSW Governments to creating a sustainable, energy-efficient future for those who need it the most.
